The american dream is a reality. Anyone has the potential tomake any amount of money they want. The possibilities are endless (the sky is the limit).
Depending on how bad you want something determines what you get. Some people get lucky and accomplish things without trying or wanting to. Poor people or minorities have a harder time getting to where they want to get. Some people have connections that introduce them to important people or show them ways to improve(mentors).
You can be anything from a drug dealer to a stock broker. Examples are Tony Montana or Bud Fox. In some cases after achieving the dream it is lost by death or it is taken. But some people could end up with happy endings if they are not too greedy.
So the american dream to be rich powerful and happy is possible but it could come at a great cost. Sometimes it might not be worth it . But if you have nothing to loose thatn follow your dreams

I think the American dream is a reality but to most of us it just ends up being an illusion. I think its because people dont strive enough to succeed in life. We dont have enough want for things, people just rather give up and settle for less.
This is sad because I think everybody has potential. But we are born into poor families and sometimes the circumstances we're in really affect our thinking. It just makes you believe that you dont have the same opportunities as wealthy people do.
Thats why in a way it is an illusion to everyone because in out mind its not possible. But theres many stories out there of people who really strive to get there lives going and become someone big. Even while coming out of a bad situation.
People accomplish their dreams in different ways. Some by working hard others illegaly. Like Gatsby in 'The Great Gatsby'.
But i think weather you make it big in life doesn't really matter. You dont need to become famous or a millionaire. What matters is that you accomplish your dreams and be happy in life.

The American Dream an illution or a reality?
Based on the great gatsby my ideas are that he achieved it he was not happy. to me there is an american dreamnot everyone wants to live in poverty or middle class some actually want to strive and be worry freeand at the same time be happy. Some call it illution because they know that in there life time they will never be money rich just rich in belifs. Some can turn it into a reality and some have already done it by working hard others just by being born into wealth
for me its reality but an illution at the same time I know I might not be millionaire rich. But I will be financually stable to go take trips around the world buy anything well almost anything I want.I know I wont struggle Finasually. I'll make it in life .

Men VS Women
When it comes down to this, men think of women as tiems, possesions, and property, what have you. When it comes to women, we think of guys as the boss, workers, whatever. So when it comes to 'Taming of the Shrew' they have a lot in common.
The fisrt sister, Bianca, meets a guy. She cant do much because her sister wont date or anything. So the guy that met Bianca tells this other guy to try and get Kathrine (her sister) out and about. Well they find out its lie trying to tame a bird. Really hard to do.
The guy is trying to 'tame' Kathrine while BIance is in lala land with this other guy (ha) and while Biance is on her way to marrige, Kathrine is on her way to try and tame him. Well it doesnt work and Bianca is going to get married.
Kathrine isnt allowed to the wedding and by the time its over and Biance is happy, Kathrine is tammed and is disciplined. So in the end Biance got what she wanted and Kathrine has gotten a guy ( yippy) and so they both (sisters) get along just well now.
So when it come to Men VS Women, one will always dominate the other but sometimes, the women can but in this story, the guy won this round :) and they all live happy and what have you.

In boo0ks there is so many dysfunctional and functinal families. In the Great Gatsby and the Taming of the Shreww there is some family issues. The three subjects are Abuse (evil people), cheating(why did you do that), and sibling rights (evil sibling).
In the Great Gatsby Tom and Myrtle are at a party. There is drink, dancing, and chit-chatting. Mrytle and Tom were talking. Mrytle repeatedly said "Daisy," to Tom. Then TOm slaped Myrtle . This example a sign of Abuse.
In the Taming of the Shrew show sinling rights. Kate and Bianca are sisters and they have those good'ol times with parents and you can't go if they are going.
There is a lot of cheating that goes on in the Great Gatsby. Daisy with Gatsby and Tom with Myrtle. At Gatsby's parties Daisy goes with Gatsby and talks. While Tom wonders around.
In the end there is man lesson learned through just by reading a boring book.

The role of men and women throughout history has been controversial to say the least. It has also been the subject of many literary works. One that shows the best examples of these roles is The Taming of the Shrew.
One of the classic Male roles in society is being the head of the house or "The Man in charge". This is displayed perfectly through the character of Baptista. While both of his daughters have unruly behavior at times, they always listen and obey their father.
One of the classic Female roles in society is being the obedient "Stay at Home" wife. This is displayed through the behavior of Kate at the end of the play. Though early she is a cruel and bitter shrew, she later becomes the loving and obedient wife of Petruchio.
One of the most controversial and classic roles of the relationship between a man and a woman is the idea that a man owns or possesses a woman as an object. This is related to us through the Taming of the Shrew not only in the Title alone but also in the way that Petruchio plans to "train" Kate the way he would train a hawk.
As you can see, there are many roles of men and women throughout society but these, which are most prominent, are exemplified in The Taming of the Shrew.

he American Dream culd mean something diffrent to every person. Some peoples american dream is to come to the united states to work and get money for their kids. For others is to make money the easy way like marring rich guys so they can have it easy like Daisy from the great gastby. Her american dream was to have money and get what ever she wanted. The american dream really isnt all that though its really to have a better life and a better future for them and thier family. Yeah money is something you need but its not that bad that you have to marry someone you dont love cause then you could be miserable but then again the american dream is diffrent for every person.

Ashley O'Connell Final Exam English 8
What is the American Dream? It is perceived as having a big house, a nice car, having alot of money, and having a family.
In the Great Gatsby, the American dream was exactly what people think it is. Gatsby had a huge a house, he had the beautiful woman, and alot of money. He also threw alot of extravagant parties.
The question is, does money really keep people happy? Nick who was one of the characters in Gatsby did not have alot of money, but he still had people around him that made him happy. Nick saw that Gatsby was not that happy even though he had all of those nice things.
Therefore in some cases the American dream is really only being happy having people in your life that support you and that are there for you.

Well in beowulf, Grendel had a bad relationship with his mother. They argued a lot and had lots of fights.
In some familys these types of situations happen which unfortunatly sucks.
A lot of problems get in between the parents and the kids relationship. The kids feel like they dont care or feel left out. And sometimes the kids start getting attitudes with the parents.
But in beowulf grendal always had problems with his mother. Like how we have in some family.
In my experience i have gone through this. With my parents seperating when i was 5 years old. We went through moving house and who to live with or who owns who. Me and my brothers ended up moving to Reno with my dad. And my mom stayed back...and that was really hard for me and my brothers.
I start crying everytime i talk about it...because i really really miss my mom. And seeing people with their moms..hurts bacause i dont have my mom here with me. But i know my mom goes through pain when she visits.

The American Dream was revealed many times in The Great Gatsby. One of the many times is how he was going to Gatsby's parties to fit in. Also another example is he could have just wanted to feel rich. I will now explain why I feel that's how the American Dream was shown.
I feel it was Nick's American Dream to fit in and be cool. Mainly because when he first moved next to Gatsby, he would always watch the parties wondering what it would be like to be there. Another example is how he became Gatsby's friend. He ended up always at his parties. This is how Nick's American Dream is shown.
But in another perspective it could have been Nick's American Dream to feel rich and luxurious. I mainly think this because hes always with Gatsby. Like when hes at his parties at Gatsby's mansion. Then while he hangs out with Gatsby in his nice car. This is how it could be Nick's American Dream to feel rich and luxurious.
There could have been many other ways to look at it. But that's my perspective on how the American Dream was shown in The Great Gatsby.

The meaning of Tragedy is based on love, murder, and crazy people as well as cheating. The Great Gatsby is based off of all these four things. Murtals dearth, Gatsbys death, Georges death, and Nick in between the truth to everything.
Daisy is Gatsbys long lost love. Gatsby is not able to be with Daisy because daisyis married to Tom and has a daughter with him. Daise does love gatsby but she does not want to leave Tom. Daisy knows that he cheated on her and has a lover that he goes to see. Yet she decides to stay with him.
Tom is cheating on Daisy with Myrtle who is married to George. Myrtle knows that Tom has a lady and yet she still loves him. George meets Nick which is Daisys onced removed cousin. So Nick is in the middle because he chooses not to say anything about Tom and Myrtles affair. He hides it from his own cousin!
Gatsby proves his love to Daisy and yet she doesnt want to be with him. Gatsby and Daisy are in toms car and daisy is driving. Myrtle is trying to run from George who found out that Myrtle and Tom had a thing together behind his back. Daisy runs Myrtle over and Myrtle dies. Gatsby takes the blame leading to his death. George kills Gatsby then kills himself.
Everything in the book "The Great Gatsby" leads to the tragisc death of Gatsby.Love will drive you to do crazy things. If the one you love dies you settle for revenge. Then you get revenge and you regret what you did leading to your own DEATH.
Maria Reyes ENG8-Final Exam
As a person who came to the United States as an immigrant the "American Dream" is our main goal. The whole big house with a white picket fence, the fancy car, and having your family with you sharing all the wealth and riches that you have with them is something that most families come for.Once we get here we ask the big question; how do we get to all the things we desire? because we get so sure about the plan we never ask; will we be happy with the things we want to get to?
One thing I have seen in many cases in life, movies and so on and so forth; is that people are not happy with how they live. Although you may have everything you wanted your life is alwyas going to be filled with drama. So much people stop thinking of what really is worth thinking of, which is your family and love. One example is The Great Gatsby; sure he has the mansion, the cars, and all the parties that he desires to have, but he does'nt have the love of his life which makes him live a misarable life, in other words what good did it do him having all that he had.
When you start thinking of the drama money gives you, it's too much to handle. "Never estimate the power of money" people say it to try to make people want to have money because of all the luxurious things you may fill your life-style with; but what this really means is that money has so much power that it can control you if you dont know how to control it. Many people fall from the top to start all over again because of this same reason. Or in other cases people fall from the loving hands of their family to the slums. To me having the American Dream is something I want to reach to with my family all together, and not forget about those who really care about me. Something I will never forget is that happiness is no where near having all the money in the universe, I'm not saying that money is bad its just that we need to keep in mind that its not everything when we are in our way of reaching our goal.
Kayla Chandler ENG8 - Final Exam
In literature, a woman has always taken a role in helping bad things happen, and men are generally the savior. This has taken place since the beginning of story telling, dating back to at least to one of the very first bible stories.
The story of Adam and Eve is one nearly every child knows well. God creates Adam first, and then creates Eve as a wife and companion. He tells them they can eat any fruit except from the Tree of Knowledge. And, what does the woman do? She eats an apple from that tree, and gets Adam to do the same. They are shunned out of the Garden of Eden forever, and she ends up responsible for original sin. It happens that way throughout the bible. Two women fight over a baby, and a man settles the dispute. A woman asks for the head of her enemy, making her bad. A woman is the reason for temptation. That's just how it is.
In the Great Gatsby, if it wasn't for Daisy, there wouldn't even be a story. Daisy is responsible for Myrtle's death, even if she didn't mean to. She was speeding, and hit her, and she didn't even stop to make sure the woman was alright. Daisy is responsible for the lies and deceitful ways of both Gatsby and Nick. It's her cheating on Tom with Gatsby that causes Nick to lie. She is bad.
"The Taming of the Shrew" brings us Katherine. She is bad tempered, rude, and just plain mean to everybody that she meets. She is incapable of giving an even semi-decent first impression, second impression, or anything following. She even ties up her own sister. She is only considered "good" when she becomes submissive and does everything her new husband asks or commands.
Women, then, are bad unless they are following the rules by the letter, in literature. Now, it is acceptable, and almost expected, for women to break the rules a little. It is our character and nature. Maybe we've had the right idea all along.

The Hero's Journey for the movie Castaway was a clear and easy to understand. They basically gave you each of the parts you just had to translate it in your own words. What you think they were telling you.Chucks calling was his responsibility to fedex. He had to leave this fiance after he had just proposed. This is what got him to his threshold. The plane crashing into the ocean was his decent. When chuks got stranded in the deserted island was the abyss. The only thing he had as a mentor was wilson a vollyball he drew a face on it to talk to. I think thats the only thing that got him through the hard times at the island. When he finally desited he had enough he built a boat made with logs and rope that was the transformation. At this point Chuck has gone through alot he has learned how to survive for himself in the middle of nowhere. When he finally got home after four years he was considered a hero for his survival skills. The feelings that all of this experiance created he learned to appreciate life.Chucks Hero Journey was full of ups and downs.Happy or sad full of disappointments when things didn't work out he still made the best of what he had and that helped him get through it all.

The film Castaway is a movie about people changing. It's shows how a man flips himself around due to a storm and a plane crash. But to him, this could have been the best thing that happend to him. It changes the way he looks at life. He notices that hthe things that didn't matter, are the most that are important. Chuck's calling was his job. He needed to deliver a package that was very important. He didn't want to go, because Chuck did't want to leave Kelly. On the way to the airport it was hard for Chuck. When it was time to go, he purposed to Kelly. They kissed they were happy, but what they didnt know...was that this was they're last good bye for a long time. And pff he went into the sky to deliver the package. In the island has no idea how he's going to survive. He manages to learn how to build, cook, and fish with out knowing how. Also in the island he had only one friend, a volleyball named "Wilson". Chuck talked to this volleyball for advise, like a mentor. They listen to eachothers problems and both decided what was best for them to do. The time he spent on the island, he planned his leaving. Chuck stayed in this cave where he wrote everyday how long hes been there. Finally when the day was just right, he went off into the see. He went days eating fish and talking to wilson. He was rescued the next morning. Everybody was glad to have Chuck back. But Kelly was still very shocked. Kelly didnt know how to respnd to chucks returning. Chuck and Kelly talked about how much he had missed. So in my own words, chuck followed every step and made an effrot in changing the way he was and to me he's a a hero.

In the movie Castaway the main character's name is Chuck. Chuck has a calling for his job which has to do with departing from his wife. With that saying that was the threshold for him by leaving his wife. The descent for him was getting on the plane and going on his mission.
Chuck ends up going through a big accident on the plane which leads to the abyss. The abyss was being stranded on the island with know one and nothing in hand. After a long time searching the island for any other survivors or any other life form. Chuck ends up with lots of FedEx packages and finds thing that come in handy. He ends up having some mentors to help him go through his tragedy. His mentors are the love of his life Kelly, his wife and a knew friend wilson.
Many years go by and still he is stranded. He gets used to his new surroundings and learns alot about the island. Chuck had alot of time to himself without being with anyone he learned to fish, make a fire and many more things.
Chuck ends up having transformations, some of those are knocking his own tooth out with a rock and an ice skate, he learns to make string out of a tree, he also learns to make a raft to try and escape the god foresaken island. He wait for the oppertuned time to try and escape, he needed the right wind capacity and enough.
So Chuck ends up getting enough wind to sail him out into sea. He's off in the sea once again stranded on nothing but a raft and his friend Wilson. He wakes up one day by this enormous whale he hadn't thought of what the whale might do. He's off in the ocean with no food or water until finally he awkes next to a ship that is passing him, he hasn't enough energy to get up and get the ships attention. For a while it seemed like they would not see him but obviously they rescue him and he is saved .
Chucks journey was like an adventure. he has gone through things that he probably never would have. The creation he gets out of everything was to not worry about the time just worry about life it's self and hope the best comes out of the worst.

Ashley O'Connell Final Exam
Chuck was a fedex supervisor. He wanted to have the fastest mail delivery business throughout the world. Chuck did whatever it ook to try to develop that dream, or that goal that he wanted to accomplish.
Chuck's calling was his job. He felt mthat he was in fact called out to have the best delivery service in the world. He did everything he could to make that happen. For instance he he took a boy's bike and used it to deliver everyday mail. He had set times that he wanted letteres and packages, he wanted to have in the trucks for delivery.
One day his job recquired him to leave his fiance at an airport to deliver a package. This was the threshold that he went through. So he went, he got on the plane to deliver this package after telling his fiance that he would see her soon.
That all changed after Chuck's plane crashed, ahich of course was the descent of his journey. After the plane crashed he took the the blow up raft and floated on open waters for at least a day. His abyss was the island that he was stranded on for a total of four years.
While being stranded on the island he had a volleyball and a picture of his fiance which then became his mentors. Things that he felt that gave him hope to stay striving to live.
In the four years that he was stranded on the island a wall of a portable restroom floated ashore. He sat and looked at it for a while, he saw a potential raft that he could construct. This became the transformation of leaving the island or the near ending of his journey. So he built the raft and left the island, which he then was found by freighters of a freight ship.
In the creation or return of his journey he delivers the last package and becomes a changed man in the sense that he just lives life one day at a time. He doesn't rush things anymore. He just lets things be the way they come. An example of this would be when his fiance had gotten married and had a child during his journey. He did not try to fight or win her back even though he was very hurt deep down inside.
Chuck is a true hero!

Erika Showalter Final Exam-Extra Credit
Two things I learned about during this semester were Archetypes and the Hero’s Journey. For extra credit on my final exam, I thought I would combine those two subjects and write an essay on what I believe the archetype of a Hero’s Journey is. In the trilogy The Lord of the Rings, Frodo Baggins demonstrates the perfect example of a true hero.
The first stage of the Hero’s Journey is separation. Separation consists of the calling, the threshold, and the descent. Frodo’s calling is when his uncle, Bilbo Baggins, gives Frodo “The Ring”. Ringwraiths find out Frodo has the Ring and start to hunt him down. This forces Frodo to leave the Shire to protect his home and loved ones. Frodo, along with a few trusted friends, then flees to Rivendale. It is in this Elvish city that he finds his threshold. After siting in a council filled with argumentative dwarves, elves, and humans, he feels compelled to help. It is with this decision that he begins his Descent. He must then travel across Middle-Earth to the pits of Mordor. This begins the next stage of the Hero’s Journey.
The second stage of the Hero’s Journey is Initiation. Initiation consits of an abyss, a mentor, and a transformation. Frodo’s abyss is when he enters the land of Mordor and makes his way to Mount Doom. By this time his only help is Samwise "Sam" Gamgee, his mentor. This faithful hobbit gardener sticks by Frodo’s side and helps him physically, mentally, and emotionally. He journeys with Frodo to the very pits of Mount Doom. In Frodo’s Journey he has two transformations. The first being a dark one, where he becomes obsessed with power and does not put the Ring into the core of Mount Doom. Luckily Sméagol/Gollum, a creature who was a former owner of the Ring who had become obsessed with it, fights Frodo for the Ring. During the struggle, the Ring falls into the pits of Mount Doom and is lost forever. This begins the third and final stage of the Hero’s Journey.
The last stage of the Hero’s Journey is the return. The return’s only element is creation. When the ring is destroyed, he creates saftey for all of Middle Earth. He returns home and restores the Shire to the way it was. It is shortly after this that his second transformation occurred. Having been wounded physically and emotionally during his Journey, Frodo realizes that he is a new person and that things can never really go back to the way they were for him. It is with this that he returns to Rivendale and, along with his uncle, leaves Middle-Earth forever.
Frodo Baggins is just one of several heroes in the trilogy The Lord of the Rings, yet he is the most prominent and archetypal hero i’ve ever known. He is a timeless example of a hero who battles the bad guy, and although he falters, helps the greater good in the end.

Final Exam- Maria Reyes
A Hero's Journey is what makes people consider a man/womena hero. The many obsticles
he or she had to overcome to do what they believed was right. Movies make observers understand everything they went through in order to see him/her as a hero.
In the movie "Castaway" Chuck had to lealve the country to send packages for Christmas. He had basicly proposed to his girl friend , Kelly, when he left. Because of this it was very had for him to get on the plane and her behind. Not knowing what he was going to expirience he got on the pland and left.
On his way, the plane piolet lost control of the plane and ended up crashing in the middle of the Ocean. Chuck made it to an Island. Being stranded in the Ocean was something that he could not bare, he intended to make a raft but failed because of the equipment he used which was large peices of of metal. After months of being in the abyss he made a volley ball his best friend and called it Wilson. The memory of Kelly and his new companion Wilson were the things that helped Chuck go through the things he went through in four years.
During those four years, Chuck had to learn a variety of qualities in order to survive: bieng his own dentist was not has hard as we may think, all it was, was the bravery of knocking off his own tooth. Making the rope out of vines from trees was something that did not come to him right away. The fact that it took him some 3 to 4 days to accomplish making fire with rocks, made him a more indipendet man. Eating was something that we all do, after four years of being stranded on an Island made him a pro at catching fish with a pointed end stick. After finally understanding that he had to get out on his own and no one will go for him, he started working again on a other draft. He got enough wood from the trees, rope to tie them toghether and a bit more courage to through himself to the ocean, risking his friends and his own life.
In the waters he lost his friend Wilson, and gave up disposing of the paddles. The next morning he found himself in front of a huge ship, in which he got rescued from. Onces he got the "Welcome back party" he found out that Kelly had gotten married with another man and had a child with him. Although he never got his wife back he did make HIS world a better world to live in. Appriciating the every moments in his life was another thing he learned from his experience.
The Hero's Journey is something he definetly went through and is why many people see him as a true hero. This movie not only helps the viewer understand his journey but also makes them think the wonderful " What if?" questions, such as "What if that was me?"or other things you can come up with. Telling us if this really happens to someone they will be hero's.

The hero's journey is a common theme used for stories and movies. Beowulf goes through the hero's journey. Beowulf has to go through certain stepa to become a hero. For example he has to go through the seperation, the initiation, and the return.
Beowulf had to go through the seperation by leaving his home and going on a journey to Herrout. Beowulfs calling was from a king in Herrout, who told him of a creature that went to his village and killed his people. Beowulf mist go to Herrout and stop the creature whom the people call Grendal. Beowulfs theshold as well as his decent was going to Herrout.
The process of Beowulf going through the initiation was that he had to conqure the abyss. Beowulf conqured Grendal with his bare hands for no sword could kill this foul beast. The creature had his arm torn off and bleed to death in his mothers arms. Beowulf set off in search of the swamp where Grendals mother lies. Beowulf 's mentor was that he chooose not to fight with any weapons against Grendal. In fighting Grendals mother no sword could pierce her heart, for his sword was enchanted by magic. but he took an axe that was in her cave swamp layer and slayed her. Beowulfs transformation was killing Grendals mother and fighting with no weapons, making him an epic hero.
Beowulfs return gets the people of Herrout happy. Beowulf gets his treasure. Beowulf has to fight one last creature to save Herrout. Beowulf must slay a dragon. Beowulf asded the king that what ever treasure lie within the dragons cave, that if he was to slaying the dragon and was to die in doing it, to burn him in ship along with all of the dragons treasure. But to give some to the people as well. Beowulf slays the dragon but in doing so he died.
Overall my conclusion on Beowulfs heroic journey was that he left his home to save the people of a village in need. He became an epic hero by fighting without weapons and slaying the creatures. Beowulf died in saving Herrout. But in doing so , everyone knows who he isand his name will be rememberd. He will be rememberd as a savier of Herrout.

Literature and film does show us important social and moral problems. Most of them have some sort of message weather its good or bad. Even some cartoons and t.v sitcoms have some sort of message for the audience.
For example, the movie we watched this semester "Castaway." In the beginning of the movie Chuck was always worried about time and his job. He worked for Fed Ex and was always rushing everywhere, even two minutes meant everything to him. His job was the reason why he had to leave and which is why he was on that flight that crashed.
After the crash he was stranded on the island and went through a lot of struggle everyday in order to survive. He had to find shelter and find ways to get food. He was stranded for four very long years, well for him i can imagine.
When he finally got off the island and went back home he saw life at a new light. He appreciated life a lot more then he did before. He didnt worry so much about time anymore. He just went where the wind would blow pretty much.
I believe this movie did have a very good moral. The struggle Chuck went through and how he changed from the beginning of the movie to the end gives an important message. To me it pretty much says not to take things so seriously. To stop, take a deep breath and allow yourself to enjoy life. Because unexpected things can happen suddenly. You never know when your life will end so dont take it for granted.

A hero's journey is a series of events and obstacles, a good example of that is Chucks journey. His job makes him travel on Christmas and leave his fiance behind. The plane ends up crashing on an island and he has to learn to fish and build fires. Eventually he returns home and learns to appreciate things.
Chucks separation was how his job made him travel on Christmas and leave his fiance behind. His calling was his job and how he had to fly Christmas presents out to people. The threshold was how he didn't want to leave his fiance when they were at the airport. The descent was getting on the plane and leaving. Chuck didn't want to leave in the first place but he knew he had to.
Chucks initiation was when the ends up crashing on the island and he has to learn to do things to survive. His abyss is being stranded on the island and the ocean. His mentors had ended up being Wilson the volleyball and the picture of his fiance. His transformation was how he had to learn to build fires, fish, and become a dentist and pull his own tooth out. He had also learned to build a raft and finally got off the island after four years.
Chucks return is when he returns home. The creation was how he learned to appreciate. He also learned that a time schedule is not that important and that it was okay to be late. The island ended up making a good change on chuck and his behaviors.
Chucks hero's journey was successful and he had experienced the obstacles. Chuck had not wanted to go but he went anyway. He learned how to do stuff like build a raft and was finally able to make it off the island. He ended up getting home after four years on the island and learned to appreciate things. Chucks journey had made a overall good person of him.

The only thing that Mildred and Clarisse have in common are their looks, and a sort of interest in Guy Montag. Their differences, however, are quite obvious.
Mildred and Clarisse remind me of Guy's personal Angel and Devil, one feeding him ideas, the other telling him to leave things the way they are. Mildred is more of an Angel, telling Guy to keep things just the way they are, and not bother to make any changes. Once she finds out about the book, she tries to convince him to burn it. Clarisse, though, is the Devil on his shoulder, feeding Guy ideas of how things could be, causing him to stir things up, and, even though she dies, her image and voice constantly follow Montag, further inspiring him to break rules, and even commit murder.
Mildred enjoys things the way they are. She prefers watching television as opposed to having some sort of adventure. Her adventures are only lived through the "family" on television. She doesn't want things to change. Clarisse, on the other hand, likes stories, books, talking, and adventure. She would rather live her life to the fullest, rather than living through other people, or the t.v.
While these two women may prove to be polar opposites, they move the story along, and help to keep it exciting from beginning to end.

A hero is defined as a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. The story of Beowulf, while and exciting epic tale, does not show all the proper elements of the Hero's Journey. Although he could be mistaken for a hero at first with his distingushed sheer strength, his qualities are anything but noble.
The first stage of the Hero's Journey is Separation. The separation consists of the calling, the threshold, and the descent. Beowulf's calling is when King Hroðgar asks Beowulf to defeat Grendle, a horrible monster terrorizing the village of Herot. Beowulf doesn't really have a threshold. I suppose you could say his journey to Herot but this journey is not really covered in the story. Beowulf's Descent is when he sleeps in Herot and waits for Grendle to attack.
The second stage of the Hero's Journey is Initiation. The initiation consists of the abyss, a mentor, and a transformation. In Beowulf, the abyss would be when he enters the swamp in search of Grendle's vengeful mother. Beowulf doesn't have a mentor by any traditional standards. The only thing remotely similar to a mentor would be the Giant's Axe he finds and uses to defeat Grendle's mother. The final element of transformation is also lacking in the story of Beowulf. The closest thing to a transformation he has is conformation of his He-Man invincibility attitude, which in my opinion is just his shallow attempt at compensating for his lack of any empathetic emotion.
The third and final stage of the Hero's Journey is the return. The only element of the return is creation. Beowulf doesn't create anything. Some may argue that he made Herot a safe place, which is true to some degree, but in protecting Herot he puts his own home in danger.
So, in conclusion, although Beowulf is a mighty warrior, he is no hero. His main motivation is his own glory and wealth. Beowulf is nothing but a self-centered stereotypical He-man egotistical blockhead.

David Smith Final exam
In my opinion Chuck from the movie Castaway is a true hero. I say this because it takes a lot from a person with the will, drive, and his sanity to escape from a deserted island, and be a different person coming back to society and run his life once again. Some things it takes to do something like this would be motivation, strength, drive, intellect, hope, and the self-confidence to not go completely insane.
From the start Chuck had to be a true hero to do what he does, as being a FedEx executive. He new he would have to leave his fiance to do his job which he had to do before he got stranded on an island. So his "separation" from his personal life and Kelley is his job, he had to do what he had to do. The "threshold" is the air-port and saying goo-bye to Kelley. His "descent" of this is actually getting on the plane and leaving for work.
The "initiation of Chuck's journey is crashing on the plane and spending some time in the ocean, and finally arriving on the island. Arriving on the island and thus being stranded is Chuck's "abyss". Building a fire and being able to knock out his own tooth takes some intellect and courage. His "mentors" as you could say would have to be Kelley because she gave him his drive and motivation to leave the island to see her again. Wilson is the other mentor , even being an inanimate object gave him the hope and motivation to survive. Finally building the raft and getting off the island he finally has his chance to go back to society.
upon his "return" he has "transformed" into a better person for a new life (his second chance). And in this transformation he became a totally different person especially because he lost the love of his life to another man. He became a more life appreciated person, and will now be a more of a personal-life man instead of being the " working-man".
Even though Chuck's life isn't what he expected upon his return he has expressed the features of a true hero, bye being able to survive by himself with nothing to help him from the start. And in being able to do this Chuck is a true hero.

Heather Ripke--Hero's Journey--Final Exam
Chuck's Journey
Chuck, in his journey, encountered three self changes that he encounter while over a course of four years. These three changes are the separation, Initiation, and the Return. Towards the end of his journey, he is no longer the man he once saw himself as. He is now a changed man who appreciates life and takes nothing for granted anymore.
During his Separation, he found himself caring more about time and hurrying than anything. Making sure everything was on time and everything was where it was supposed to be at. His job was calling him in one day and the threshold that made him say goodbye to his fiance that he never really wanted to leave. He did give her a gift, a ring, but never said why he did, and then left to his job. During his descent he boarded a plane that was shipping fed ex things to places over seas. Soon later, a storm approached and it made the plane crashed.
During his initiation, his plane crashed into the sea and he finally drifted to the island. During the abyss he searched the island only to find himself alone and the only survivor of the crash. Soon later, lots of items came drifting ashore and he used them to his advantage but never oped up this one package. The symbol of wings was something specail and meant something. His mentors became a pocket watch which had his fiance, Kelly, picture in it and always talked to the watch every time he wanted to give up, also a volley ball in which he got angry at one day after cutting his hand wide open threw the ball. He made it his friend with his bloody hand print on it and named it Wilson. Wilson was always there and even though it didn't talk, it was his friend at heart. His transformations were how he taught himself how to fish and make fires, he also mad a raft he soon used four years later to escape using the seasons and the winds. He used the wood from the land and rope used by the outer layers of the trees. It took him a while to build it but he soon completed the raft and still had the unopened package with him.
During his Return, Chuck was found by a large ship passing by after floating forever on the open sea. He was followed by a whale that did keep him wet with the water all the time, I guess you can say the whale was also a mentor. The ship had taken him home which he spent time with family and friends that had missed him so much. When his fiance found out, her new husband had told chuck that she moved on. She never forgot him in those four long years. Soon after his return, he went to her house (his old house) and she told him that they looked forever to try and find him, and that she missed him. He got his car that he owned back and departed from the girl he once was with. During his creation, he found himself appreciating more about life and looking at things differently now. Remembering how he took it all for granted, now he just appreciates it more than ever. Soon after, he returned the package he never opened. Later, he walked along a road and came to a four cross road. He took the path that the wind had chosen for him to lead his newly changed life forever.
Chuck went into life a ' taking for granted life's ways' coming out a ' appreciating life's ways' man. He was changed forever during those four long years, never giving up hope of returning home one day. He now looks at life differently than what he used to. In my opinion, he has become a "Hero". Heroes never give up, and Chuck never gave up his will to survive and live. He used the items that floated ashore to his advantage, only to make a way to get home. He knew there is always a way and he found it. That's how in my opinion he became a hero. He became one in his own eyes and the eyes of others having the will very few people have.
