In my opinion Chuck from the movie Castaway is a true hero. I say this because it takes a lot from a person with the will, drive, and his sanity to escape from a deserted island, and be a different person coming back to society and run his life once again. Some things it takes to do something like this would be motivation, strength, drive, intellect, hope, and the self-confidence to not go completely insane.
From the start Chuck had to be a true hero to do what he does, as being a FedEx executive. He new he would have to leave his fiance to do his job which he had to do before he got stranded on an island. So his "separation" from his personal life and Kelley is his job, he had to do what he had to do. The "threshold" is the air-port and saying goo-bye to Kelley. His "descent" of this is actually getting on the plane and leaving for work.
The "initiation of Chuck's journey is crashing on the plane and spending some time in the ocean, and finally arriving on the island. Arriving on the island and thus being stranded is Chuck's "abyss". Building a fire and being able to knock out his own tooth takes some intellect and courage. His "mentors" as you could say would have to be Kelley because she gave him his drive and motivation to leave the island to see her again. Wilson is the other mentor , even being an inanimate object gave him the hope and motivation to survive. Finally building the raft and getting off the island he finally has his chance to go back to society.
upon his "return" he has "transformed" into a better person for a new life (his second chance). And in this transformation he became a totally different person especially because he lost the love of his life to another man. He became a more life appreciated person, and will now be a more of a personal-life man instead of being the " working-man".
Even though Chuck's life isn't what he expected upon his return he has expressed the features of a true hero, bye being able to survive by himself with nothing to help him from the start. And in being able to do this Chuck is a true hero.
